Twitter Guide: How Hashtags Work

I’ll make this an occasional series as I find more help for people new to Twitter. Thanks to Mashable for this post. Hashtags are used to identify a topic on Twitter. Add # to the front of a word to make it a topic. Like #eyetoeye. Easy eh!

Manage Twitter Streams in Your Browser

There’s another way to manage your Twitter streams – Monitter. You just type your search terms into the boxes at the top of the three columns and watch as they fill with tweets. You can add more than three columns by clicking on the plus option at the bottom right of your screen.

You can also do this on Tweet Deck but this is an application you have to download and install as opposed to monitoring Tweets in your browser. At last a way to manage your Tweet stream when you’re on an iPhone on the train!

Make Twitter Work for You

Did you know if you search Twitter with a hash tag (#) in front of your search term you will get a stream of results around that term. Try using a desktop Twitter client like Tweet Deck for the best results.

Use it to track your interests or for research. Current trending topics would be seen like this: #Obama or #Inag09. I’ve found it to be one of the more useful tools available – especially if you want to follow events like MIDEM, the annual music industry convention currently on in Cannes, France or get virtualy involved with Amplified #amp09, the WebTV conference currently on at the ICA in London.
